UK Parliament votes to legalise assisted suicide – find out how Scotland’s MP’s voted

On Friday, the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill passed Third Reading in the House of Commons by 314-291 votes and will now be passed to the House of Lords for further scrutiny.

On Friday, Bishop John Keenan described the outcome of the vote as “devastating” and said “there is no dignity in handing a lethal concoction of drugs to a vulnerable person to help them kill themselves.”

Bishop Keenan also promised that the “Catholic Church will continue to offer her unwavering commitment to the poorest and vulnerable” and “will never abandon” them.

Whilst the law would not apply to Scotland, it is likely to influence similar legislation currently being considered by the Scottish Parliament and which is expected to be considered by MSPs later in the year. Many of Scotland’s MPs voted on the Bill, with 19 voting in favour, and 30 voting against. All nine SNP MPs excused themselves from the vote as the law does not directly affect Scotland.
