Scotland’s Bishops Welcome Election of Pope Leo XIV

The Bishops’ Conference of Scotland has warmly welcomed the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as Pope Leo XIV.

In a letter addressed to the Holy Father, the Bishops conveyed their congratulations on behalf of the Catholics of Scotland, pledging their loyalty to the new Pope, and assuring him of their prayers and support.

Pope Leo XIV was elected on 8 May 2025, following a two-day conclave that began on 7 May. He becomes the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church and is the first pontiff born in the United States.

Delivering his first address as Pope Leo XIV from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica, the Holy Father greeted the world in the name of the Risen Christ and expressed his heartfelt hope that peace may enter the hearts of people across the world.

In a gracious nod to his predecessor, the newly elected Pope thanked the late Holy Father for his Easter morning blessing upon Rome and continued in the same spirit, praying that evil may never prevail.

Pope Leo XIV spoke of his vision for a missionary Church that promotes dialogue, builds bridges, seeks peace, and welcomes with open arms those in need of charity, light, and love.

Addressing the crowds gathered in St Peter’s Square, he reflected on his spiritual heritage, reminding the faithful that he is a son of Saint Augustine — the gifted pastor and great saint who taught that the Church, both shepherds and flock, are united in love and service, walking together on the journey towards God.

The Bishops of Scotland pray that the new Holy Father will bring this same spirit of peace, light, and understanding to all men and women in Scotland and throughout the world, so that the Church will embrace those who are fearful or struggling with doubt.
